New Brunswick’s provincial parks are where so many of our favourite memories are made, and that wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture’s wonderful NB Parks/Parcs N.-B. park managers. We are looking forward to all the parks opening up this month for another exciting season for tourism in New Brunswick.

The provincial government has approved disaster financial assistance programs to help individuals, small businesses, not-for-profit organizations and local governments that suffered property damage following two storms during the winter.
On Dec. 18-19, heavy rain and strong winds elevated water levels along the coast and caused power outages and significant damage across the province.
On Feb. 28-29, heavy rain resulted in significant flooding in the Sussex region and infrastructure damage across southern New Brunswick.
Disaster Financial Assistance helps with eligible damage and losses that threaten the health and safety of individuals, local governments and small businesses.
It is not a replacement for insurance and only covers eligible uninsurable losses. It assists in covering only the basic costs of essential items. Camps, cottages, boats, cars, trailers and yard cleanup are not eligible. Residents should contact their insurance provider for details about their coverage before applying.
“We are unveiling the assistance programs at this time to help individuals, businesses and communities in their recovery efforts,” said Public Safety Minister Kris Austin. “I applaud the swift actions of all involved, including first responders, local government leaders, volunteers and members of the community, whose efforts played a significant role in keeping everyone safe.”
Details regarding how to apply for disaster financial assistance will be announced soon. Until then, residents are reminded to:
-Contact their insurance companies immediately to report damage.
-Take photos of damage to their homes or properties.
-Keep receipts of any repairs and replacement purchases.
-Log the number of hours of work undertaken for residents who are cleaning their own properties, or family members or those who have assisted in the cleanup of their property.

The Sussex Legion is home to important services for our veterans and serves as a vital gathering place for our community and their fundraisers, events and programs.
Through the Community Investment Fund I was happy to secure $10,000 for much-needed renovations that include a new doorway at the entrance. Thank you president Barb Bickerton for showing me the work.
