I have been blessed to get to know domestic violence survivor and advocate Colette Martin of Miramichi the past three years since I became an MLA and minister. Her story is tragic but it is also so important in raising awareness of the horrific realities of intimate partner violence in hopes of a day when this violence ends. In New Brunswick more women are murdered by their partner than anywhere else in Atlantic Canada, and Colette was nearly one of them 26 years ago. Intimate partner violence happens to men and women in our community every day.

Thank you to the Sussex Area Domestic Violence Outreach program for hosting Colette in the community to share her story as a champion for domestic violence survivors. Community partners including Horizon Health, Tim Hortons, AX Art Gallery and Kendall’s Sweet Treats helped make the evening possible.

Public Safety Minister Kris Austin was in Sussex tonight to engage with mayors and councils of the region, as well as local government personnel with expertise or significant interest in crime, law enforcement and/or crime reduction. He revealed work the province has under way to reduce the crime rate and increase public confidence in community safety, but also to hear the perspective of community leaders. There is a lot of good working being done by Minister Austin and his department - thank you. It was great to have you in the riding.
